Multipanel upgrades to Exterior Grade MDF wall panels

Multipanel is now using Exterior Grade MDF as core in the production of its Hydrolock® T&G panels. Medium-density fibreboards (MDF) create durable and strong panels with high stability, but they are also flexible and sustainable.

Why Multipanel has chosen to use Exterior Grade MDF panels

The sanctions on Russian timber have drastically reduced the availability of sustainably produced birch plywood, which meant that we were unable to source the volumes required for our manufacturing process in 2022. We made the decision to source alternative materials to produce our leading bathroom wall panels. We chose medium-density fibreboards as our new core material. Exterior Grade MDF meets our sustainability demands of being FSC® certified and is durable enough to support our Hydrolock® system.

What are the advantages of MDF?

  1. Durability and strength

When used as core material, Exterior Grade MDF creates durable and strong wall panels. It is denser than plywood and offers excellent stability during installation. Exterior Grade MDF is also a flat-surfaced product, and it is ideal for our decorative laminate and Multipanel. Since plywood is manufactured from real wood veneers, it can be susceptible to surface irregularities, which means it can be challenging to source high quality sheets.

  2. Sustainability

Multipanel’s aim is to create a completely sustainable manufacturing process, which is why we only partner with responsible and sustainable timber manufacturers who use FSC-certified source material. Our new core material is manufactured by Medite who meet both our sustainability and performance requirements.

  3. Locally sourced

Our timber manufacturer, Medite, is based in the Republic of Ireland and sources its timber from forests with FSC and PEFC certification. These forests comply with strict regulations to secure the appropriate management of our natural resources. Medite Exterior MDF does not contain added formaldehyde (NAF), which makes it a safe resource to manufacture indoors.

Quality assured

The reputation of our organisation rests on the quality of our products. Our finished panels have undergone rigorous testing to ensure our Exterior Grade MDF wall panels are compatible with our Hydrolock system so that we can manufacture the best possible product.

Our quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and covers all areas of the business from manufacturing to customer service.

FAQ

Is MDF waterproof?

Our Exterior Grade MDF wall panels are water-resistant and 100% waterproof. They interlock seamlessly and do not retain moisture. The specially designed laminate surfaces do not attract mould and are easy to clean.

Medite Exterior MDF has excellent moisture resistance and its class D4 (durability category) of BS 4965 makes it an ideal core material for areas with prolonged exposure to running or condensed water. For these reasons, it is perfect for use in moist or wet interiors, such as bathrooms.

How is MDF made?

MDF, or medium-density fibreboard, is created from wood fibre, which is pressed into Multipanel at high temperatures. The bonding agent typically consists of synthetic resin. Since it is manufactured (and not harvested), MDF contains no knots or rings.

Is MDF sustainable?

Our Exterior Grade MDF is sourced from sustainable forests with Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) chain of custody certification. Multipanel complies with globally recognised ecological, social and economic standards.

Are MDF bath panels easy to install?

We created Hydrolock to enhance the visual impact of our wall panels. The Hydrolock edge allows panels to be joined together without the use of mid-joints, to create a smooth, almost seamless expanse of waterproof walls.

Multipanel are precisely engineered, which makes them easy to install and completely watertight. Find out more about our Multipanel training programme Multipanel U that will guide you through everything you need to know when installing our wall panels.

Can I use MDF in my bathroom?

Since Multipanel Exterior Grade MDF wall panelling is water-resistant and 100% waterproof, it can be used safely in bathrooms.
